So, I'm on a plane back home to NYC from XG4 in Houston, and boy is there a lot on my mind folks. That's when it hit me, since everyone and their mamas in wrestling is doing it, how about I put up a little blog for ya'll to let you know what wrestling's most colorful color commentator is thinking? So that's what you're gonna get now cats & kitties. I gotta warn you though, seeing as I'm not on camera, I don't have to be unbiased here, so you might not like what I have to say, but you're gonna read it anyway.
STANDARD BEARERS
The one thing I took from XG4 more than anything else is this...it didn't matter one bit who decided defect to that other joint. XWA is still putting down some quality action for it's fans, and XWA is the proud home to the two greatest champions in wrestling today. Yeah, I said it. Kayn and Jamie Fury, you know the names already. Not only are they pinnacle of the XWA, they're the pinnacle of the sport, period. Anywhere, any league that's out there, you put their best man and woman against these two, and I'll put my money on them any day of the week.
What's there not to say about Kayn. The Death Metal Goliath. The man who is, was, and always will be the one true FRANCHISE of the XWA. (Oh no he didn't!) He might not have been the first man through the door, but he's done more for this company and the sport than anyone else ever has, or maybe dare I say ever will. A lot of guys walk around calling themselves franchises and don't even know the meaning of the word. Lemme give you a definition in the "sports" vernacular:
Tell me, what man in this business that doesn't wear a trenchcoat or facepaint defines that right there better than The Champ!? NOBODY!!! And if you want proof, just look at what the man's done over the years. The only streak that means anything in this business, beating the likes of Pollox Troy, Jon Payne and good God I lost count who else before he finally lost. Then gets concussed by some white haired punk, comes back and wins the XWA World Title the next year? I mean...who does that? The man's on another level way and well above anyone else in this business. Nobody exemplifies what the XWA is all about more than Kayn, and I dare anyone to try to make a point otherwise. When he's done, he might be the greatest superstar in the XWA's history...assuming he already isn't that.
Then, let's talk about Ms. Fury. What a woman. Did you think there would be someone out there who exemplifies the word "Diamond" more than the departed one who used the word as a ring name? Well, I did...from the second that I first saw this woman in the ring. Every so often someone comes along who truly changes the way you look at things, and Jamie Fury did that from the word go.
Her drive, her determination and her work ethic is only eclipsed by the fact that she's as humble as they come. I know some tools out there that if they did half of what Jamie's done would be calling themselves "the best in the world", and hell...I'M calling her the best in the world-of the opposite gender anyway-and she'd be the last person to say it. Amber Gianni thinks so. Sonya Robbins said so before their match. Jamie Fury proved it during and after their match, and what a fight it was. But you knew Jamie wanted it. You could see in her eyes that she wanted to prove to the world that she was the greatest wrestler to ever be called Diamond Champion, and now, in reign number three, she has the chance to make that set in stone, but like I said in Kayn's case, that's probably the case as we speak.
So there you have it. Two fine, upstanding individuals. Two proud competitors. Two triumphant champions, and most importantly, two people who can easily carry the weight of the XWA on their backs (and I mean that, have you ever seen them in person? Man!). They've already been doing it for years though. I gotta agree with what Amber said in her blog, cuz it applies to the guys as much as it does the girls, these two are the measuring sticks. Everyone should strive to achieve what they've done for themselves, their careers, this company and this business in general. We're lucky to have them, and even luckier that the XWA ring is the only ring you'll see them perform in.
BLESSING IN DISGUISE?
That could be the case for a lot of guys in the XWA, now that a lot of the over-hyped, so called "mega talent" has moved away. If you want proof, just look at the rest of the card that took place at XG4. These guys put on a show, I tell you! And now, guys like Chris Dynamite, Dice K and others will have the big, bright lights shining on them the whole year.
I talked to the Prez a few days ago, and she said she was really looking forward to seeing what these guys, and the guys who've been signed for 2011, will be able to do. The league's wide open right now...it's kinda like a new season of the NFL, everyone's a contender. Yeah, you've got your favorites still (like the world champs for example), but anyone on any given night can make something happen that's gonna make an impact and a statement, and I have a feeling that's gonna happen a lot in 2011.
NO SHAME
Lemme just say something else though, about one woman in particular that goes by the name of Sonya Robbins. There were points where I though she was gonna do the impossible in her match against Fury. She's got nothing to be ashamed of in losing at XG4. If anything, we saw something just as sure-fire as the fact that Jamie Fury's the best in the biz...the fact that there's no real arguing who's #2 on that list right now either. I mean hell, she won OTS to get that shot. The girl is tough. I knew it was just a matter of time before we'd be saying her name more, and now that time has come. Ms. Blackheart, Chris Lionheart, if you're reading this...one word, two syllables. REMATCH.
BUZZ-WORTHY STUFF
And now, to close it out I'm gonna fill you in on something I think you oughta pay attention to, and that's the match that Ashtian Aries and Spyder had at the show. That was a war right there, and seeing that from two guys who just basically walked in from nowhere almost was amaaaaaaziiiiiing! I heard of Spyder before, but I didn't think he was that heavy a hitter. Then again, he's got the Irish flag inked on his arm, so shame on me for that...being Irish and not knowing how to fight is like being Black and Republican.
As for Aries, well, he's not the biggest guy out there, and I thought that would be a disadvantage cuz the current "No-Limits"-less iteration of XWA means he's gonna be in there with giants. He'll have to beat a giant if he wants to be the World Champion, but he proved he's got all the tools to do just that. I hope they plan on a return engagement in 2011, cuz that was fun to watch.
That's it for this first entry. It's gonna be interesting to see what develops over the off-season here. All I gotta say though is that if you think XWA's lost some "spark", prepare to be dazzled if the last show of 2010 has anything to say about it.
