After the announcement was made as to whom was going to step into "Satan's Structure" tonight, the backstage reporting team was hard at work getting responses in from all of the participants. One such person who knew all too well of what she was about to get into was the new and two-time Diamond Champion Jamie Fury. She was inside of her locker room, already gearing herself up. For her, there was no shock or surprise. Having just won the title again at OTS, she knew that automatically put her into this...arguably the most grueling match on the XWA Calendar.
Right on cue, Fabiola knocked on the door with a cameraman behind her. Jamie, already in her wrestling gear stands up and takes the title belt from where it sat atop her duffel bag and slings it over her shoulder before she opens the door to answer. It was all about the aesthetic of it. A champion should hold the belt proudly for all to see, for he or she has earned the right to be called "the best". SHe opens the door and is greeted kindly...
Fab: Jamie, first of all, congratulations on becoming a two-time Diamond Champion! You know it strange that we haven't heard anything from you since your victory at OTS...
I know, and there's a good reason why. Tonight. I went right back into the gym and right back onto the mat to train. There really wasn't much time to celebrate for me because I knew full well what was coming up next. I've been down this road before.
One year ago I won the Diamond Title at OTS, and one year ago I walked into the Devil's Playground as champ, and walked out empty handed. You don't even understand how that sat in my head. This night right here and now is what I've devoted my entire season to. With all due respect to the ladies who will be in there with me, they aren't my opponents tonight. That...thing they call the Devil's Playground chamber is. That's everyone's opponent. You biggest ally too, just ask Tanden Fearse. In one night she made a career changing moment happen.
Any one of them can do that tonight. Sonya, Okami, Vesper, Manami, even Bianca...anything is possible. But there's one thing that I'm going to give my all to make possible, and that's to conquer the beast.
Fab: That is going to be a tall order there. Only one defending champion in the history of Devil's Night has ever emerged victorious in the Playground.
Yes, and with that kind of history behind it...it makes the challenge that much tougher. But you know what? It all boils down to the one thing that's motivated me all year, a saying that a champion is not truly a champion until they defend their title. Last year, I failed to do that, so winning the Diamond Title wasn't complete for me. This year...tonight...I have the chance again to make my defense the single toughest, greatest defense in my entire career.
It's Deja Vu for me Fab, and I'm gonna do everything in my power to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself.
With those words, the segment was over, and it couldn't be any clearer what the mission was. Jamie Fury would be put into Hell's chamber to defend the holy grail. Fab left and Fury stepped back into her locker room again. She sat the title back onto her bag and stared at it for a few moments. Would she emerge from the darkness with the golden prize? Only time would tell. All she could do now was continue to stretch and loosen herself up for what was going to be a very long night.
