She always had a way of blending in to the crowd, even when that crowd consisted mostly of pale, sun deprived English on their way home from shopping. She took a random picture of the passing crowd around her, being brushed up against several times by the passing population. It didn't bother her. Space was relative.
Take away someones persona and you are usually left with a decent human being, at least that was what she believed. Take away the profession. Take away the mask and robe. Take away the costume, the music, the fireworks. What would you have? A 5' 8", young Asian woman on holiday in London. There would be no slow motion replays and there would be no autographs. Maybe she was one of the lucky ones. A minor celebrity, but not really at all.
Black umbrellas began to pop open around her before she even felt first rain drop. An English second sense as the often dreary sky over their heads began to let go in a steady drizzle. Okami stuffed her camera back into her day pack and pulled the brim of her baseball cap even to stop the rain. It obscured her face as well, which always made her more comfortable.
The pace of the crowd picked up as they wanted to get home out of the rain. Many heading down, underground to catch the Tube. Okami's home was very far away, but she did think about returning to her hotel. But it was rather far and seemed like a waste of an opportunity. How many more times would she visit London, if ever again. She continued to walk along, short enough to 'share' a passing umbrella or two, past a department store and on down; past Trafalgar Square with its wet lions on guard. The rain continued without any hesitation, it seemed to be here to stay for the rest of the day (week).
When in Rome. She stopped under shop canopy and watched the people around her. Some hopped on busses or hailed cabs, others ducked into shops. Then she noticed many shaking unbrellas and heading into public drinking houses, or Pubs with its inviting smell of warm soups and strong beers.
"When in Rome."
She said to herself, and clutching her collar against the weather she crossed the street to first Pub in sight. Walking inside.
