Glitter was in full throw, and the season premiere had already been packed with action. But things were about to get that much more interesting in the Nassau Coliseum. Into the PA speakers fill Ultraspank's "Click", the new entrance theme to the XWA Diamond Champion, Tanden Fearse. The crowd erupts into a deafening roar as she steps out to the stage, the coveted title draped over her shoulder.
Lucy: There she is, the queen of the mountain. The XWA Diamond Champion, Tanden Fearse. What a year she had in 2008.
Travis: You said it. She came from out of no where to quietly raise up the ranks. And now, she's the best of the best.
Tanden makes the walk down to ringside. Show her appreciation to the fans, she graciously gives high-fives to them along the way. Inside of the ring, she hoists the title high in the air, followed by a rather colorful pyro display. The scene was electric as the fans roared in support. As the smoke clears, Tanden's given a mic, and begins her official 1st address as Champion.
You know something funny, everyone? I never even got the chance to formally make a championship address last year. I won this title at Devil's Night, being one of the 1st two females in the ring, and outlasting the grid, which was a damn tough grid of gals might I add. When it all boiled down to it, it ended up being me and then reigning Diamond Champ Jamie Fury. And I'll be straight up with you all, when she pinned and subsequently eliminated Kim Hunter, I felt my hear fall into my ass. I mean, we all have seen what Jamie had done up until that point. There's a damn good reason she's called "The Diamond Dominator". But it's not the 1st time I've been an underdog. I've played that role my entire career. So I sucked it up, and I fought on. Because like the saying goes, it's not the size of the dog, it's the fight in the dog that counts. And when it came down to it, my fight was a little more then she could handle. But I sure as hell would get to let things sink in, because just weeks later, here comes The Diamond Conflict match. The biggest match of the season as far as the Diamond Division goes. And once again, I find myself in the ring with three of the best female athletes in the world, Marisol Cardinale, Tiffany Masterson & former Diamond Champion Roze.
Tanden takes a brief pause.
On one end, you had a student of one of the most legendary and influential women in the sport, on another end you had one of the most fearsome and brutal competitors XWA's ever seen, male or female, and lastly you had one of the most cold, calculating and cunning women to ever step in a ring. And all three of them didn't have losing as an option. But thing was...neither did I. So I did what I always do. I rolled up my sleeves and I got to work. And in the end, busted open with a mouthful of my own blood, I hit Marisol with probably the best Dropsault I ever have or ever will perform in my career, and survived another match. Still your Diamond Champion. And I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you, people...
DAMN is it going to feel good to actually only have one opponent for my next defense.
Tanden chuckles a bit.
Lucy: Between Devil's Night and XGamesII, she basically had to survive 8 women to win AND retain the title. That's quite a feat.
So here we are, 2009. XWA Season Three. And here I am, the XWA Diamond Champion. I don't know about any of you, but I sure as hell am excited. Why? Because I'm living proof that having a big mouth and a bigger pair of boobs don't make you successful. I'm proof that in the end, hard work, determination and believing in yourself can make all the difference. I'm not the biggest gal in XWA. I'm not the most technically sound. I'm not the most skilled, or the most ruthless or even the most athletic. But I am the Diamond Champion. So what's that tell ya', folks? I know what it tells me. That it doesn't matter how much you preen, posture and prance around, it's what you do between these ropes when Mr. Timekeeper over there rings that bell. And I think I've done pretty damn well for myself, don't you guys?
The crowd answers back with cheer. Tanden nods confidently.
So, I guess the last order of business is actually the 1st order of business. And that can be summed up in two simple words...
Who's 1st?
Tanden lowers her mic. With those two words, the message was clear. The champion was ready, willing and able to accept the challenge of whatever female stepped out from behind the set.
