After the thread in the café
Val chased after Cassie as he was concerned for her well being, from what he understood she had been fired and the reason judging by the cafés owner was Val. He came to an alleyway and he had appeared to have lost her when he heard the sound of a woman crying, he cautiously inspected as he didn’t want to frighten her if it was indeed Cassie. Val then saw her and approached carefully, “Cassie?” he called softly. The woman looked up her eyeliner had run and she didn’t say a word but Val could see it was her as he noticed the uniform under her jacket too. Val put his arm around her and sat beside her, “Cassie what happened?” Val asked as he attempted to wipe her tears. “I got fired.” Cassie replied abruptly she was upset and didn’t exactly blame Val.
Val then realized that it was because she gave him her number, “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have asked for it, I didn’t think about these things.” He said trying to sympathize with her. “It’s not that I wanted to give my number, it’s just that job was all I had and I am behind on the rent so I’ll soon find myself homeless.” Cassie said she was a waitress because she wasn’t skilled enough to be anything else, and she didn’t want to use her looks to get by. “Hey, things have a way of working out for the best, especially when I am around.” Val said trying to reassure her but the truth was he had only just met this girl. For a moment Val thought back to a discussion with Papa, Val had asked how he would know when he fell in love and Papa simply said “when the time comes you’ll know.” Val looked at Cassie and he knew.
“Papa was right, eh, Papa is always right.” Val said as he looked at Cassie again and into her eyes, “What are you talking about Val?” Cassie asked as she looked somewhat confused at Val’s random sentence. Val smiled “Just something my Papa said to me as a boy.” He said before pausing. “Do you believe in love at first sight?” Val asked, Cassie looked a little stunned at the question before replying with “I guess it can happen, why?” Val then brushed the hair from her face and said “Because I asked my Papa when I fall in love how will I know, and he said I’d just know.” Val smiled at Cassie who wasn’t sure if this was a bad or a good thing what Val was talking about. “Val, are you sure you didn’t bump your head too many times in the ring?” Cassie asked as it was the only thing she could think of. Val looked a little puzzled with this but I guess it did come across as a little forward.
“Cassie I haven’t felt this way about anyone before, but I understand if you’d rather take it slow. I really don’t mind I just saw you in the café and I thought wow, then my stomach felt a little weird and your smile knocked me out. I was yours from that moment.” Val said softly and Cassie did feel a little special for hearing that, but it didn’t exactly solve her problems. “That’s great Val and I like you too but right now I have the rent to consider and it doesn’t pay itself and I haven’t got a job anymore.” She replied whilst trying to keep a nice tone. Val then understood that maybe love wasn’t her main concern right now, “What if we found a place as roommates?” Val asked, “You don’t give up do you?” Cassie replied in a more playful tone. “I am serious I need to find a place and I don’t like living alone, and I can cover your rent for a while so you can have time to get back on your feet.” Val said smiling and then Cassie smiled back at him, “I couldn’t do that.” Cassie replied.
“Why not?” Val asked his tone rather sharp and harder than before, “I barely know you and I don’t know I don’t normally make decisions on an impulse like that.” Cassie replied in a tone matching Val’s. “Then let’s get to know each other, but not just here somewhere warmer.” Val said before he stood up and then held his hand out to help Cassie to her feet. “So where shall we go?” Cassie asked, “I know another place around here that we won’t be disturbed and it is usually quiet around this time and I think you could use a drink.” He replied before beginning to lead Cassie to a bar and lucky for Val he looked a little older than he was as he wasn’t old enough to drink. Val found a table in the corner and he asked Cassie what she’d like to drink before going to the bar, a few minutes and he returned with a mineral water and an Alco-pop for Cassie.
“So Val tell me about you and you mentioned Papa so you have family right?” Cassie asked before taking a sip of her drink, “Yeah I have family, I am Italian-American. There’s Mama and Papa, I have four sisters overall I am the second youngest my siblings. There’s my big sis Candice who is a wonderful hugger, and then there is Cadence who is very much a smaller Candice. Then there’s Maria who is a big model who lives in Milan, and then there’s my little sister Nicola who Papa is very protect of now.” Val laughed as that was an understatement Papa was over protective of all his children including Val. “They sound nice, a little like my own family. Well before my parents died, I have a brother but he never calls and I guess after so long I just gave up on calling him.” Cassie began she didn’t seem that sad about it which as Val came from a big family where family meant a lot he didn’t understand why brothers and sisters drifted apart.
“I guess he just doesn’t respect you like he should, I try to call my sisters to find out how they are doing and importantly if they are safe.” Val said before taking a sip of his mineral water. “It’s funny because at home we’d argue like cat and dog yet we all keep in touch, and sometimes I miss the little arguments we’d have.” Val added with a bit of sadness in his voice, “Sometimes families appear to hate each other but don’t fall apart, and if an outsider attacks them they bond together. Families are a strange thing Val; no two are alike and no matter how bad you’d never trade them.” Cassie replied before smiling at Val and rubbing his hand. The two continued to talk family for a few more minutes, before buying some more drinks. “So what does Cassie do in her spare time?” Val asked he had an idea of how she was but he wanted to hear it from her, “I tend to read a lot, I like a good book and I have a cat so reading and stroking him at the same time is kind of my spare time.”
Val didn’t have Cassie pegged as a reader, he thought she was more a people person and would be with friends or at parties. Not that he was disappointed as maybe it was Cassie’s financial situation that made her more stay at home. “I go to the gym too, I like to stay in shape” she added. “I can see that and a good job you are doing.” Val replied before smiling it was a little complement but sometimes the ladies like them, “I can see that you spend a lot of time in the gym too Val.” Cassie replied obviously noticing that Val was a very muscular man, as he still had his body builder shape and was yet to develop that bulkiness that wrestlers had to cushion their falls.
The two continued to talk well into the evening and were getting to know each other.
