We know him, we love him, we fear him (well, most people anyway), but yes there is a story to the inspiration of the man named Johnathan Punchawoski. A sick human being who's become my brainchild, and something of a commodity. I created the character last year specifically to compete in XWA. He was born of my desire to have a character who was no frills, no gimmicks and no remorse. A character that's basically me. (Note: I'll never use the "With the volume up" label because anyone who knows me off the board knows that I AM Punch 24/7.) The persona of Punch as I stated is all me. He reacts to situations the exact same way I would myself in situations, accept for the fact that I can't hit someone over the head with a Kendo Stick in real life, though I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish I could sometimes. As a character, many of Punch's traits are my own, which is the reason why I can depict him in any kind of situation. It's that range that I love most about him. The fact there is no end to what kind of things I can do with him, because NOTHING is to far fetched for a character like him.
As anyone who's got eyes in their head has seen, I don't take anything Punch does or says seriously. Why should I? He's a fictional human being. His crass offensiveness is yet another extension of my own personality (Again, anyone who knows me off the board can attest to that), as is his humor. Unless I generally don't like person, which I admit has happened a few times, I keep it all in jest, but with that sting that makes it interesting. There aren't many handlers here in XWA...or anywhere actually that I can go full out how I'd like to with him, because while there's no limit to how low I can go with the one-liners, people have theirs. Hence is any has paid much attention in 2008 we've seen a "Kinder, Gentler" Punch then the original 2007 potty mouth. But if ever I can find someone to work with that won't take anything Punch says personally, he'd return to his old school self.
There's other influences behind Punch beyond my own persona as well.
Dennis Leary. The spiritual inspiration behind the character. If anyone remembers Punch's debut promo post, it was set up exactly like a Leary stand up set. That dry, stinging, punch in the guy kind of humor that makes you wonder if he's trying to make you laugh or make people laugh at you.
Richard Pryor. AKA the 1st "King Of Comedy". His wit was 2nd to none, as well the raw, uncensored delivery of his humor. He had a way of making the rather tragic and rough upbringing he had funny as hell, and Punch shares a similar air to him in that regard.
And of course last but not least...
Sam Kinison. If you can't see the character traits that Punch shares with him, kill yourself. Seriously. The brashness. The loundness. The penchant for obscenities. The being a chauvinistic swine. All Sam. (And a bit me to. I'm a Man Ho, SUE me.)
As far as Punch's outward look, that's still an ongoing evolution. The initial look for Mr. Punch was this guy...
The Prodigy's (New album in 2009 FTW) Keith Flint. He had that wild, out their look that I wanted Punch to have at that time, though if it were possible Punch would have his hair style to this day. Double Mowhawks FTW. Between 2007 and 2008, Punch took a different roll of the dice in looks, changing into a more Sandman inspired look. For 2009 however, it goes deeper as the basis of his attire influence is THIS guy...
The hardcore icon, Mad Man Pondo. This ties into my focus in Punch's further character development as a Hardcore wrestler. Initially he was just a foul mouthed heel, but between the mid to late portion of 2007 (After Punch's feud with Kris Cade) and all of 2008, I've worked to establish him as a Hardcore psychopath. 2009 will see Punch turn the corner fully as a weapon swinging, chain smoking, liquor drinking time bomb waiting to explode. Character wise, I'm going a different approach to make him more of an "island" in XWA, in that heel have more face like tendencies when competing with other heels, and more heel like tendencies when up against faces. So he won't be a tweener in that he's face for a while, then heel. He's still going to be a full time jackass, just split between the context of who he's facing at the time. I've invested a lot in Punch's development, more then I actually thought I would on the fact that he wasn't even my number one guy two years ago. I hope to get some snaps of Punch soon, as their's two versions of him at the moment, the one I've made, and the XWA friendly version tweaked by Kaoz. I wanna find a happy medium of the two to be the definitive FINAL version that you'll see splitting foreheads open in 2009.
