The scene was the legendary Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. One the most famous "intimate" venues in the world, only in the last decade has it been the host to professional wrestling events, but those events have been nothing short of spectacular in comparison to the ones that take place only a few short blocks away at Madison Square Garden.
The press and wrestling columnists/insiders stood in waiting for a major announcement inside of this storied building, regarding the XWA's usage of the venue as well as one final major order of business for the 2008 XWA Season.
The President of the company emerged from the back and was showered with flash camera lights and off-ended cheers and howls by the fans who were also invited to this press conference. She accepted it all with a smile and waved hello to the crowd. A small podium stood affixed in the center of the stage where she would walk to and speak from.
Hello to the press, and to all of the fans back there who've taken the time to come out here in support of the XWA. We're all gathered here in this building, the Hammerstein Ballroom because I have come to an agreement to host a yearly event here-and that event will be XWA's GIRLFIGHT.
As we approach November...Devil's Night will finalize which superstars will go into XGAMES with the XWA World & Diamond Titles. The men's main event has already been sealed, with the champion facing Tommy Tryton, Syrus The Entertainer and Scott O'Dell. On the women's side, you will have the Diamond Champ, Marisol Cardinale and Tiffany Masterson, and as has been eluded to in past posting on our website, GIRLFIGHT will determine the last Diamond to step foot into The Diamond's Conflict.
This will be a one night only tournament, similar to Only The Strong except that there will be no qualifiers. The entire contest from start to finish will crown the GIRLFIGHT Champion and the last entrant into the female main event. As of now, the seedings have not been determined. We will wait until after Devil's Night to assess who deserves a spot, but rest assured that those chosen will be proven worthy to partake in this history making night.
The XWA is proud to be at the helm of redefining what women's pro wrestling is here in North America and the world. The Diamond Division is the most watched, most popular group of women in all of sports entertainment today...and GIRLFIGHT will be an exclusive showcase of what it is that they can do. I'm also proud to announce that each and every GIRLFIGHT in the future will culminate from right here at the Hammerstein!
There was a definitive roar from the fans at that announcement.
New York is our home. This city has been the base of operations from the very start, and I was personally wanting to have at least one event every year take place here in the city. It would have been a disservice for XGAMES to take place at MSG every year...but this night, GIRLFIGHT will be special in it own right. A revolutionary night in the annals of sports entertainment!
Now...any questions?
Do you have any confirmed names to Girlfight yet?
Well, as said before...we're waiting until after Devil's Night before we can make official seedings, but I can certainly say that names such as Amber Gianni, Stacie Wilson & Rachel Dawset are under consideration, pending the result of her match with Sonya Robbins of course. Should Sonya lose, she'll have to choose to go for a Pearl title rematch or turn it away for a place in GIRLFIGHT. The same applies to the Onyx Title as well.
Exactly when will this show take place?
We haven't confirmed a day yet, but it will take place sometime between Devil's Night and XGAMES. There will be a formal announcement made on the1xwa.net as well as XWA Programming.
What about the five Diamonds in the Devil's Playground match that doesn't win? Would they be eligible for GIRLFIGHT?
There's a great question. Right now I haven't decided whether or not non-winners of the Diamond Devil's Playground will be named to GIRLFIGHT. The point is to get as many ladies who haven't gotten a Diamond Title shot into the show as possible, so those will be the first priority. If there are any spots left after that, we will see.
There is one thing that I want to make official however, and this will go for the remainder of the existence of our company. Should a major champion lose at Devil's Night in the DP match, no matter if it's the Diamond or World Title, they will have a rematch clause in place for them anytime during the next season, since they can't use it for XGAMES. That means that anytime during the season following the year they lose at DN, they can name a date for a return match for that title, and it will be a guaranteed one-on-one match. They must use this clause before the next Devil's Night PPV however, so there is something of a time limit for it to be utilized.
Now, if that's all...I think we'll put this baby to bed then. Thank you all for coming out, and we'll see you back here at the Hammerstein in November!
