THIRD TIMES THE CHARM?
By George Cleveland
NEW YORK CITY- An overcast sky over the Big Apple certainly didn't damper the hopes of one Marcus Samson as he walked out of One Penn Plaza, the headquarters of wrestling promotion XWA. Samson was in high spirits after a meeting with front office executives concerning a contract renewal with the company.
"I'm feeling very good about things this time around," said the Pittsburgh, PA native. "The last time there was a lot of doubt in my mind, there were plans that had suddenly fell through before they even got the chance to start, so I wasn't sure of anything. It's different this time around though."
In speaking of the last time he worked for the company, it was in actuality very similar to his first go-around. Working with roster members who were as he was uncertain of the young federation's fate amongst heavy criticism regarding it's owners. In hindsight though, Samson blames himself moreso than flaky colleagues for his failed attempts at competing in the now burgeoning league.
"I really wanted to be one of the staples of XWA. From the get-go I had high hopes of having my name right up there with Scott O'Dell, Keith Wyle, Ashley Diamond, Kayn and all the rest of the guys and girls they have who're like household names among wrestling fans. I just didn't put enough effort into it. I knew it was going to be a tough road to travel and by the time I was really ready to walk it I was way behind everyone else."
So the question now is...why decide to travel that road again? His answer was an optimistic one for not just him, but XWA itself.
"The time is right now. All eyes are on the XWA and everyone in it has a chance to make something happen. I look at how other places out there have kind of fallen to the waist side compared to XWA, and it was really clear to me that I had to give it another go-round and this time to make it count. You can only go so long watching other people succeed before you want a piece of the action, and it's about time that I get it, even if I have to take it by force. Chances are that's what I'm going to have to do, but I'm more than ready for it. I don't think anyone would have it any other way."
The actual details of his new XWA contract is something he couldn't discuss, but Samson aims to make his in-ring return to XWA sometime in the month of May.
