More sport, Less spectacle
by Chris Lionheart
Did anyone else catch TNA's Global Impact? Total Non-Stop Action went to Japan to face off against New Japan Pro Wrestling. The press conference in the middle of the day hyping up the card, and the overall presentation was simply spectacular. Kurt Angle vs Nagata for the IWGP title was both hard-hitting and technically sound. That kind of pure mat wrestling is what I had always hoped the Pro title division of the past, and XWA's Pure Title division would showcase. I'm currently going back to my claim-to-fame, re-training myself in submission moves. Kris Cade, the best Pure fighter there was in 2007, emphasis on 'was'. If I have to be the guy to bring this style to the fore-front of the Pure division, I will!
More recently than that, did anyone catch Brock Lesnar's debut in UFC? I've put on the shoot gloves, honed the submission skills, and even have some history with the brawling, I love the whole 'shoot fighter' mentality. I love the realism that the ultimate fight has built into it. Maybe if I ever hang up the wrestling boots for good I'll step inside that area of sports. But what I liked even more is that after the matches they had the in-ring interviews.
Ever since I ran TNB, and would add little interviews or pieces of news after matches to our website section, these are what I wanted to bring to the table. Unfortunatley it never took off last year, but as with most of the ideas I come up with, it's not a case of them being bad, but the timing is usually not quite right. That's why I enjoy being on XWA's executive committee. With XWA being considered the spiritual successor to TNB and LXW, a good number of my ideas will be put forth throughout 2008 to bring my own twist to the XWA product. We all know that XWA is already considered to be "more sport, less spectacle". Will this idea for sports-style press conferences and post-match interviews be one of the ideas that comes to fruition?
I certainly hope so...
