Chis Hevessey, the XWA superstar believed to have had his career ended last May has blazed a comeback trail into wrestling since that brutal assault. Presently touring with several superstar is Europe promoting XWA, BuZZ Berman managed to sit down with Hevessey via satellite and talk about his miraculous comeback, his plans in XWA, and the man who almost ended his career.
BuZZ: Chris, I gotta say, you look good man. REAL good. Better then you did a year ago.
Thanks, Buzz. I feel good. Best shape in my life.
Ok, let's rewind a bit. May 2007. XWA management made a release about your condition. But what was the extent of your injuries, from your mouth to our ears?
Severe concussion, 7 torn tendons in my neck, 5 broken ribs and a ruptured vertebrae. It took two surgeries to fix my neck and a surgery to remove the damaged tendons. I've got no feeling in the right portion of my neck t my collar bone and in my shoulder as well.
Damn, that's pretty graphic. The doctors were fast to tell you the bad news, weren't they?
Right after the neck surgery, the head physician comes in and tells me that they had to fuse two of the vertebrae in my spinal column to compensate for the ruptured one, which the removed. Plus the tendon damage, he said straight out that it would be a miracle if I could do ANY kind of sport, let alone wrestle.
So take us through rehab. I know it was to get movement in your neck and arm back, but you were focused on more, weren't you?
Damn skippy. I couldn't let my career end like that. I did the rehab needed to get my neck back in shape, but I didn't stop there. I kept training the rest of my body. I kept pushing myself, because I knew one day I'd be in the ring again. I wasn't about to quit. Not until I got my payback.
Let's talk about the man who started all of this in motion, The Colossus. 7'2". 400 pounds. The largest man in wrestling. Can you beat a human being that big, if you can even call him that?
I'm gonna damn well try. He took a year off of my career. He almost ended it. He took away my livelihood. And for that, I'm gonna do my damndest to make him pay. When I get back in the ring with him, it's not gonna be a wrestling match, it's gonna be a fight. Will I win? Who knows. But when I'm done with him, he's gonna regret not finishing the job on me, that's for damn sure.
So, when WILL this "fight" take place?
I've waited long enough for this. March Madness. I'll BE THERE, and I'll be waiting for him. All he's gotta do is bring his big ass out to the ring, and we''ll settle up like men. And if he doesn't, I'll be hunting his ass down to do it myself.
I've gotta say, Chris. I wish you the best of luck in taking Higby down. It's no easy task, but as Jon Payne and Adam Devlin proved last year, it can be done. Thanks for taking the time to speak to me.
Anytime, Buzz. Anytime.
