Today now marks six years from that tragic day that changed the lives of the entire world, not just the lives of the thousands of people who's lives were taken, but for society as a whole. That day, Sept. 11th...is a day that I myself will never forget as long as I live as on that day I worked but a mere 20 blocks away from the World Trade Center. It's a long way in hindsight and my life wasn't threatened but seeing those images that have been burned in our minds by the media close up, it felt as if I was mere feet away.
I saw those images first hand and it was as surreal then as it is now when I think about that day. It started like any other, I got into work and started getting things ready for opening when one of the maintenance guys said that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I didn't believe him until I open the door to the fire escape, and that's when life changed for me. Not exactly at that time though because at first we all thought that it was just just some freak accident, still believing that nothing like that could ever be done intentionally. Then the information came pouring in and soon we realized, as in all of us...that yes it could.
That's when the moment came that I myself will never forget when all off a sudden these two buildings came crashing down. You all have probably seen it on TV, but imagine if you will actually seeing it with your own eyes. It was the most humbling and terrifying thing that I have ever witnessed in my life.
It's for reasons like that which will never forget this day. So long as there remains a hole where once there stood two mighty buildings with over 2000 people just living their lives and doing their jobs, I won't forget this day. Six years to the day now and every second of every day forth I won't forget this day. This wasn't just a day when the city of New York, The Pentagon and a plane over Shanksville, PA was attacked. This wasn't just a day where the American people were attacked. This was the day that all of mankind was affected. Another grim example of just how remorseless we humans can be, and conversely how resilient we can be as well. If only it didn't take the loss of 2,974 lives and the changing of millions more.
It's easy to feel powerless in knowing that things like this are beyond our control, and that sometimes our own leaders deal with the issue in questionable ways, but in truth there is something that we can do to give us power and that is to remember. To never forget the date of September 11th, 2001 that way we can all be vigilant enough to do what we can to prevent a day like that from every happening again.
