There's a rumor going around that Sony will be releasing a $399 PS3 come holiday time. This is gonna technically make there three version available. The 60GB version, which has been dropped to $499 from it's original $599 price point, An 80GB version that will come packaged with the game Motorstorm (Which is actually a decent game. Got a 4 out of 5 on X-Play), and the $399 40GB version. The DOWNSIDE of this is that Sony has stated that the 60GB version will be discontinued once the ones in circulation have been sold out, and the 40GB version will NOT be backwards compatible with PS2 games.
So basically, it's a win-lose. You win because you'll actually be about to AFFORD a damn PS3, but you lose if you've gotten rid of you PS2. I'm personally excited about Sony doing this, as...
A. It's a move in the right direction in terms of getting more systems in more households.
B. Sony may actually start to recoup some of there losses from the PS3 launch to now. The 40GB version is cheaper to produce on the fact that it obviously doesn't have any PS2 components in it. Just the Cell Processor and Blu-Ray hardware.
So at long last, come this holiday season, I as well as the REST of middle class America will actually be able to BUY a PS3 and not have to skip out on rent or a car payment.
Thoughts?

Hmmm, interesting to say the least. I'm all for lower prices. However, the non-backwards capability kind of brings it down for me. So, 50/50 really.

Unless you rush out and get a 60GB model (and happen to live in America) RIGHT NOW, your backwards compatability will be shoddy anyway. The last of the 60GBers are the last machines to include the PS2 hardware emotion engine in them. The 80GB and 40GB will use emulation software in the firmware to play older PS/PS2 games.... and anyone who's played the godawfullness of Sonic Mega/Gems Collection on a PAL PS2 knows why that's a bad thing.
The fuck-nut deal for us PAL gamers is that we've Never even had the EE in our PS3s to begin with, so I'm gonna just wait for the price drop anyway, or else I'd be out there buying a 60GBer right now too.

I say the smartest thing to do is hang on to your PS2's and when the 40GB version comes out, snatch it up. Most of us I'll imagine have more then two consoles to begin with (I have PS2 & Wii). So you'll have you PS3, and still be able to play your PS2 cames on your PS2. That's what I plan on doing anyways.
