If anyone has played Madden 08, I have a question.
What is the coloured line that comes off your character(for hall of fame mode).
I really have no idea what this is for.

That's the route you're supposed to run. You've gotta follow it (Or try to) to get open. I assume you're playing WR, right?

Well on offense it's your route to run. On D, the read line going to the player on offense is the man you're supposed to cover. If it gos to the TE, then you cover that TE, if it's one of the backs, you cover that back and so on. The line usually shows on man to man coverage plays.

But at times it doesn't show a line to a man. It'll have a blue line, then go to a solid blue circle, same with yellow.

That's zone coverage. On those plays you have to get to the area where the circle is and wait for the play to come to you. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But when it does, kill the man with the ball.
Zone Coverage - Yellow and Blue lines lead to a circle. Yellow is a "Back" Zone where you drop back in coverage to the area where the circle is, Blue is a "Flat" Zone where you slide out to the "Flats" (Hence is why it's called a "Flat" Zone. The Flats are the area to the left and right of the line of scrimmage within 5 yards of the line). Once you get to the circle, you wait for the play to develop.
Man Coverage - Red line leading to a player on offense. You basically stick to the guy your line points to like glue. If it's a pass, you try and make a play on the ball when it's up in there air, should the play come to you. If it's a run and you're man to man on a RB or FB, you lay his ass out.

And if it's a run and the guy you're covering is nowhere near the play then just forget about him and go for the ball carrier. In Hall Of Fame mode you wanna get as many tackles as you can especially if you're a safety-that's the last line of defense on the field. You won't get as many INTs as a corner but you'll knock down a few here and there. You're job as FS is
1) Assist in pass coverage. FS usually plays the weak (left side) so they'll either cover a slot receiver, RB or TE depending on the offensive formation. Just cover your guy but keep an eye on the ball if you can make a play to it, ESPECIALLY if the pass is coming over the middle of the field, saftey live for the chance to knock a WR out who stretching for a pass.
2) Be a stopper of the run. If the linebackers can't get to the RB then it's your job to. This usually mean open field one on one situations. Just don't be too selfish with the Hit Stick is what I do, I'll go for a big hit or a strip now and then, but most times I just make the tackle and move on to the next play. FS is one of the most flexible position cuz you have to be either the 3rd corner or the 5th linebacker, depending on what the offense is doing. That's why they call it "playing centerfield", because like a CF in baseball, the FS has to be aware of everything that's going on at the line. The safties are the guys after all that actually see the entire offensive formation clearer than any other defender.

and if it's a dotted line pointing backwards? Then that means you have no defensive assignment and should just make a play on the ball.

So far, I've only gotten 1 deflection. I missed 2 tackles that's costed 2 TD's.
Just like in Highschool, I suck at my position.

Here's a little secret. You don't have to use the tackle button to tackle. If you're close enough to the ball carrier you can just run into them and make a stop. Of course this is more like to get stopped itself by a stiff arm or a Highlight move, but hey. You gotta time you're tackles and take good angles at the ball carrier. Going straight at them isn't going to cut it on tougher difficulties, you gotta cut them off and then make the tackle when they're in front of you. Try going into the gameplay settings and turning auto strafe ON. What that does in makes your guy plant his feet and keep the ball carrier in front of him while moving laterally making it easier to make a sure tackle and not get beat.

Yea, well, it's not like I'm getting a lot of action down here anyways.
Of course this is my first football game in...ever. And the team I'm on sucks...losing 17-3 against the cardinals right now.

Well in Hall Of Fame mode it's not so much how the team does as much as it is what you do. Just play your game do what you have to do and you should be fine. You might wanna try playing on an easy difficultly though, until you get a grip on the system of play and such. We're Maddenites since 89 so...yeah, Kaos and I are pros, lol.
