At five feet six inches tall, and with a bust size that cannot be seen from the planet Mars, Okami Hawaito does not look like your prototypical Diamond. Using speed over power and fluidity over brute force only widens that same gap. Her message is simple and on point. She is walking a path that she says never ends. But it does lead to interesting places and situations, such as the XWA Diamond Championship.
Fabiola:
Congratulations Okami. How does it feel to be the new Diamond Champion?
Okami Hawaito:
The belt is very heavy. I think being the Diamond Champion has the same feeling. It is very heavy.
Fabiola:
Because everyone has their eyes on you and the Diamond Championship?
Okami:
I do not think it is that. I think it is the job. I did not want to be the Diamond Champion. I wanted to see where I was and Jamie Fury was the mark. That is why I asked her to meet me in the ring. She answered me. Then I answered her. Now it is my job to show people where they are. That is a heavy task for a simple pilgrim. But the path has lead me here. I will follow it and try to learn.
Fabiola:
Throughout this season you have been very vocal in your respect for Jamie Fury. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, has anything changed in your relationship with the ex-champion?
Okami:
Yes, I respect her more.
Fabiola:
You arrived in the XWA at an, interesting, time. Last season, The Golden Age had come and gone. The Diamond Division lost their exclusive show. TakeDown was in a shambles. Was it difficult starting out here under those circumstances?
Okami:
I do not know any other time. I can not judge. It is dangerous to think what your life will be like. It is easier to just look at it. This is the XWA. It will change tomorrow. I will look at it. Then I will take a step.
Fabiola:
Another woman who has taken a step is Alundra Jade. A woman you called a mentor has stepped away from wrestling after beating long time nemesis Lakoda Rose in their 'best of three' series. It must be bitter sweet for you.
Okami:
She helped me very much when I came from Japan. I am very happy for her. She has a beautiful family. She has a home. I think in our honest hearts, we envy her. Many of us have no homes. Too many never walk away. It is sad. I know she is not.
Fabiola:
Japan has been very important to the life blood of XWA. I can't remember a single year where the men and women of Japan haven't played a prominent role in this great sport. Are you a close knit group? Do you travel together?
Okami:
We are close and far away. We travel the same places. We work in the same companies. But our paths are very different. We are very different people.
Fabiola:
Like you and Manami Kuroguchi?
Okami:
It is a good example. We share the same culture. People say we are Japanese. But I think those are the only words we share. We live in different worlds. We do not travel together. But we do meet when those two worlds touch each other. It can not be stopped. I wish it could.
Fabiola:
Another woman who seems like she won't be stopped is Paige Monroe, who has taken a strong disliking to you Okami. I can only imagine that feeling has intensified after Ring Rage. Is there some hidden story behind this feud?
Okami:
I would like you to ask her. I do not think I have done anything to her. I did not hurt anyone in her family. I did not steal anything from her house. I do not remember her in NEO Okinawa Pro. But her words are filled with anger that feels very old and personal. I do not know why. I think it is like many bad things we see. There is no real reason. It simply is. She simply is. It can not be changed. We can only change ourselves.
Fabiola:
One thing that has changed is the GM of TakeDown. As the new Diamond Champion, what are your thoughts?
Okami:
I have never met him on my journey. But I have heard his name.
Fabiola:
That's it?
Okami:
Yes, I think so. I do not think people should talk about things they do not know. There is too much of that. The wind becomes noisy with it. I am a little sad. I never watch the men wrestle. I only hear their names. The path is too demanding to follow every moving thing.
Fabiola:
Not even Sushi-X?
Okami:
Oh! He wears a mask. Of course I like him.
Fabiola:
Why do you wear a mask, Okami? Do you have some dark history or dark scars? Are you hiding or embracing masked tradition?
Okami:
It is not like that. I like the mask. It lets me be free. I am famous. But I am not famous. I am the Diamond Champion. I am not the Diamond Champion. I am on the path. I am always on the path. The mask lets me focus on that.
Fabiola:
A lot of people are focusing on your style, and more specifically your speed. What's your secret? Do you have any special training techniques that give you that quickness?
Okami:
It is something I learned in Okinawa. If you fight in a company with "Bull" Nagano, you have to think of something match power and strength. Many use tools like chairs and ropes. I did not want to do that. I do yoga for the body. I meditate for the mind. I try to eat fast foods, like fish and chickens.
Fabiola:
Chickens?
Okami:
Chickens are very fast. I can not catch them. But they are delicious.
Fabiola:
Fast is also a good word for the end of this season. It is fast approaching.
Okami:
It is too fast. It is too short. There is little time to stop and learn. What did I learn at Ring Rage? I have not had time to ask myself.
Fabiola:
It definitely gets wild from here on out as one thing the XWA does right is end an party.
Okami:
I look forward to the these steps. I know this must end. I am sorry my words are so short. But I want to thank my fans, the people who walk with me. It is my greatest honor to hear them cheer, and I will wear their Diamond Championship with that same honor. Every time they see it, they will know they are going to get everything I have. That is what Jamie Fury taught me. I will do nothing less for the fans, for the XWA and for the women I will meet on the path we share.
